Project: Facade Building Cleaning & Dilapidation Repairs
The Project for Facade Building Cleaning in Leeds
When the River Island store in Leeds moved location, APT were called in to carry out the dilapidation repairs and facade cleaning to their historic building in Leeds City Centre.
There were a number of aspects to the facade building cleaning project to include stone cleaning, brick cleaning, limescale removal, graffiti removal, stone restoration, high level façade cleaning, marble cleaning and stone repairs. The building cleaning also required the removal of bird fouling which is very common within the Leeds city centre.
APT ICC were approached because of 30 years expertise in the field of facade cleaning to buildings. Over the years, APT have restored hundreds of buildings to their former glory. Along with the architect and surveyor, it was decided that APT’s method of soda blasting was the technique which was to form the hub of the facade cleaning and restoration project in Leeds, South Yorkshire.
The Challenges of Facade Cleaning in Leeds
This commercial cleaning project was far from straightforward as the location was in the middle of the busy city centre of Leeds. The whole facade cleaning project needed to be completed on a very short timescale of 2 weeks. The building cleaning and conservation works were to be carried out during normal business hours and at quiet times during the evenings. It was imperative that there was little disruption around the cleaning and restoration area.
APT ICC’s Solution
As APT ICC are no strangers to commercial property facade cleaning; we commenced with a full survey of the site in Leeds to establish the client’s needs and provide our recommendations to the property management company for approval.
Our detailed work specification was duly accepted. Due of the short timescale, we arranged a full health and safety plan, giving careful consideration to the hazards of safe working at height of around 25 metres to ensure public safety. We were also working with and around other building restoration contractors, therefore the plan needed to include them too.
The Leeds city centre site offered very tight working conditions and once suitable equipment was arranged, we could begin with the building facade cleaning. The bird fouling was removed using a combination of two of our commercial chemicals products – Dekon 50 Deodoriser and Citrus RTU, the latter is a powerful citrus based solvent cleaner with a low environmental impact. To clean and protect the steel cladding, another of our products fitted the bill perfectly – Easy Clean Metal Polish. This product removed the soiling and left a protective coating in one application. This multi-action product also removed surface oxidation from the cladding paint, restoring it to its original appearance.
For cleaning the sandstone and brick masonry on the facade of the building, we brought in our specialist Soda Blasting technicians, who also cleaned the marble and removed the graffiti.
Another successful building facade cleaning project was duly completed on time and within budget by APT ICC with the client being delighted by the results.
