K RENDER & EXTERNAL FACADE CLEANING
Vue Cinema - Cwmbran, South Wales, NP44
Client's Challenge
Torfaen Borough Council required an urgent clean render solution at Vue Cinema in Cwmbran to address persistent algae growth across the building’s K-Rend rendered façades.
The algae staining had become highly visible, negatively impacting the appearance of the cinema complex and public perception of the site. As a prominent leisure destination with constant pedestrian footfall, maintaining a clean, welcoming exterior was essential.
In addition to the rendered elevations, surrounding external areas required attention, including pedestrian pathways affected by moss and algae and stone/masonry surfaces showing visible staining. The client required a specialist contractor capable of delivering controlled external cleaning in a live public environment, managing high levels of pedestrian movement while ensuring public safety and zero disruption.
Assessment & Planning
APT ICC completed a full external assessment in collaboration with Torfaen Borough Council and site representatives. The assessment focused on:
• Severity and spread of algae growth across K-Rend surfaces
• Suitable non-damaging cleaning methods for rendered façades
• Safe working-at-height access requirements
• Public safety and pedestrian traffic management
• Treatment requirements for pathways and stone areas
Test patch samples were carried out on the K-Rend surface prior to full works to confirm the correct cleaning system and final finish. A detailed project plan was produced, including coordination with relevant highways and public-space stakeholders where required.
Methodology
The project was delivered using a controlled, public-safety-led approach:
1. Public safety set-up and controlled access Pedestrian management systems and exclusion zones were established to maintain safe movement around the site.
2. Test patch confirmation Sample cleaning areas were completed on the K-Rend to validate the method and expected finish.
3. K-Rend algae treatment and steam cleaning rendered façades were treated with specialist algae removal products, followed by low-pressure super-heated steam cleaning to remove staining while preserving the integrity of the render coating.
4. Stone and masonry cleaning stone surfaces were cleaned to remove staining and improve overall presentation.
5. Pathway treatment and jet washing Pedestrian routes were treated for moss and algae growth, followed by high-pressure jet washing to restore cleanliness and improve slip resistance.
All works were completed with continuous public safety monitoring.
