Client's Challenge
Torfaen County Borough Council required specialist external building cleaning works at Pen Y Garn School to address deterioration of rendered walls and façades caused by persistent algae growth.
The organic growth was affecting rendered elevations, masonry, and external panels, detracting from the appearance of the school and presenting potential slip hazards within play and circulation areas. As the site is a live school environment, the council required a cost-effective, professional solution that could be delivered safely with minimal disruption to pupils, staff, and daily school operations.
Assessment & Planning
APT ICC met with council representatives on site to assess the condition of the rendered façades and determine the most appropriate cleaning approach.
The assessment focused on surface condition, extent of algae contamination, safeguarding requirements, and access planning within a live educational setting. Test areas were completed where required to agree finish standards and confirm that the proposed method would achieve the desired results without damaging the render coating.
Full risk assessments, method statements, and safeguarding controls were finalised and approved prior to works commencing.
Methodology
The rendered wall and façade cleaning works were delivered using a controlled, low-impact process:
1. Completion of test areas to confirm cleaning method and finish.
2. Application of specialist algae treatment to affected surfaces to break down organic growth.
3. Controlled low-impact cleaning of rendered walls and façades to remove loosened contamination.
4. Progressive inspection to ensure consistent results and protection of the render finish.
This approach ensured effective algae removal while preserving the integrity of the rendered surfaces.
