PEST DROPPPING REMOVAL & KITCHEN CLEANING

George Street Primary School - Pontypool, Torfaen, NP4

Client's Challenge

AJ Quinn required an urgent specialist hygiene response at St George School in Pontypool following the discovery of rat droppings within a false ceiling void located above a kitchen area.

Some contamination had fallen through ceiling voids onto kitchen equipment below, creating a significant hygiene risk within a food preparation environment. The affected area required controlled access, safe removal of contaminated materials, and deep cleaning and disinfection of kitchen equipment and surrounding surfaces.

Due to the nature of the site and the need to protect pupils and staff, all works had to be completed out of hours, with strict controls in place to prevent cross-contamination and ensure the kitchen could be safely returned to use.

Assessment & Planning

APT ICC met with AJ Quinn’s management team to assess the affected areas, confirm contamination extent, and agree the required hygiene standard prior to mobilisation. The assessment focused on:

• Safe access to the false ceiling void above the kitchen
• Controlled removal of rat droppings and contaminated materials
• Identification of kitchen equipment affected by falling contamination
• Selection of suitable cleaning and disinfection products for a school kitchen environment
• Planning works for completion within a weekend window

All works were planned to ensure safe handling, correct waste disposal, and full hygiene reinstatement before reoccupation.

Methodology

The works were delivered using a controlled, hygiene-led process:

1. Isolation of the kitchen area and establishment of controlled work zones.

2. Careful removal of ceiling tiles to access the contaminated void above the kitchen.

3. Controlled collection and removal of rat droppings and contaminated debris.

4. Safe handling and disposal of contaminated waste in line with regulations.

5. Deep cleaning of kitchen equipment affected by falling contamination.

6. Application of disinfection treatments to all affected surfaces and equipment.

7. Odour control treatment applied where required.

8. Final inspection to confirm the kitchen and surrounding areas were hygienically restored.
