HIGH LEVEL CLEANING & VENUE PREPARATION

Monmouthshire County Council - Abergavenny Market Hall, South Wales, NP7

Client's Challenge

Abergavenny Market Hall was selected as a key venue for the National Welsh Eisteddfod 2016, requiring urgent commercial building maintenance and
high-level cleaning with only days remaining before the event.

The venue required extensive internal cleaning and restoration works, including high-level ceiling cleaning, stone wall cleaning, steelwork cleaning, window and skylight cleaning, and gutter clearance. Timber ceiling panels also required specialist cleaning to improve presentation and hygiene, while lower ground floor areas needed commercial cleaning and painting support.

The project presented significant challenges, including restricted access due to ongoing building works, complex internal heights and geometry, limited floor loading capacity, and the requirement to protect market stalls throughout delivery, all within an extremely tight mobilisation window.

Assessment & Planning

APT ICC met with Monmouthshire County Council's estates and safety representatives on site to assess the condition of the building, confirm surface areas, and evaluate access constraints.

The assessment focused on determining the most suitable high-level cleaning methods, safe access systems within floor loading limits, protection measures for market stalls, and programme sequencing to meet the fixed event deadline.

A tailored cleaning programme and full health and safety plan were developed to allow rapid mobilisation, safe working at height, and high-quality presentation results across all areas of the venue.

Methodology

The works were delivered using a structured, phased approach:

1. Rapid mobilisation and controlled site set-up within restricted access conditions.

2. High-level ceiling, timber panel, and steelwork cleaning to remove accumulated contamination and restore internal appearance.

3. Stone wall cleaning across approximately 8,000m² of internal surfaces to improve brightness and presentation.

4. Internal glass, window, and skylight cleaning to enhance natural light levels.

5. High-level gutter and roofline cleaning to restore maintenance standards.

6. Commercial cleaning and painting support to lower ground floor areas where required.

Final inspection and controlled handover to ensure full event readiness and stall protection.
