HAZARDOUS WASTE DISPOSAL
Rhondda Cynon Taf Council, Ysgol Gyfun Cwm Rhondda - Porth, Wales, CF39
Client's Challenge
Ysgol Gyfun Cwm Rhondda required professional assistance with the identification, handling, and disposal of hazardous materials held on site. Due to the nature of the substances involved, the school needed a specialist
contractor capable of managing high-risk waste streams in line with strict UK government and CLEAPSS regulations.
The materials presented potential health, safety, and environmental risks if not managed correctly, making compliant removal and disposal essential to safeguard staff, pupils, and the wider site environment.
Assessment & Planning
APT ICC conducted a detailed assessment of the hazardous materials present on site, identifying two specific waste streams requiring specialist handling:
• Radium-226 (CLEAPSS Type 8a)
• Radon-220 generator (Thorium hydroxide) (CLEAPSS Type 10)
All planning and classification were carried out in strict accordance with CLEAPSS guidance and UK hazardous waste regulations, ensuring full compliance prior to collection.
Methodology
Following assessment, APT ICC coordinated with its specialist waste control department to arrange a compliant hazardous waste collection.
Each material was handled using approved containment and transport procedures, ensuring safe removal from site and secure disposal at licensed facilities. All actions were completed in line with regulatory requirements governing radioactive and hazardous substances.
