Client's Challenge

UCB contacted APT ICC to address extensive green algae growth affecting the external façades and cladding of Johnson Towers, a prominent building within their Stoke-on-Trent campus.

The organic growth was impacting the building’s visual appearance and creating an ongoing maintenance concern. The client required a specialist exterior cleaning contractor capable of removing visible algae and staining while applying a treatment designed to help prevent rapid regrowth and support long-term façade presentation.

Assessment & Planning  

APT ICC assessed the condition of the external surfaces to determine the most effective and appropriate cleaning method without compromising the underlying substrates.

Drawing on over 30 years’ experience in exterior cleaning and façade restoration, we selected a process that combined targeted chemical treatment with low pressure cleaning techniques. This approach ensured effective algae removal while maintaining the integrity of external finishes and delivering a consistent final appearance.

    Methodology

    APT ICC delivered the exterior cleaning works using a structured, low-pressure methodology designed for sensitive façade surfaces.

    The works were carried out as follows:

    1. Pre-treatment application of Algae Free, APT Commercial Chemicals’ specialist green algae remover, to impacted areas.

    2. Controlled dwell time to allow the treatment to break down organic growth and staining.

    3. Low-pressure superheated steam cleaning to safely lift remaining contamination from cladding and façade surfaces.

    4. Final controlled rinse-down and visual inspection to confirm a clean, uniform finish.

    This approach ensured effective removal of algae while supporting longer-term regrowth control.
