GRAFFITI REMOVAL & OIL SPILL CLEAN UP
Caerphilly County Borough Council - Pont Joe Calzaghe Bridge, Caerphilly
Client's Challenge
Caerphilly County Borough Council required an immediate emergency response following a significant diesel spill along a section of the A465 dual carriageway at Pont Joe Calzaghe Bridge.
An oil tanker incident had released a large volume of diesel across the highway surface, creating an immediate and serious safety hazard for road users. The contamination significantly reduced surface grip and posed a high risk of secondary incidents if not addressed urgently.
Due to the scale of the spill, its location on a major traffic route, and the risks involved, the council required a specialist emergency oil spill clean-up contractor capable of:
• Rapid out-of-hours mobilisation
• Operating safely within a live highway environment
• Working under strict traffic management controls
• Effectively removing diesel contamination from the carriageway
• Restoring safe driving conditions as quickly as possible
Assessment & Planning
APT ICC attended site as part of an emergency response and immediately
assessed:
• The extent and spread of diesel contamination across the carriageway
• The condition and type of road surface affected
• The most effective degreasing and wash-down methodology
• Jetting pressures required to remove contamination without surface damage
• Traffic management and safety requirements for operatives and road users
• Recovery methods needed to remove residual fluids and contaminants
A rapid-response plan was implemented focusing on containment, aggressive degreasing, controlled high-pressure jetting and full surface recovery, ensuring the road could be returned to a safe condition without delay.
