Client's Challenge
University Hospital of Wales contacted APT ICC following a sewerage leak that contaminated a carpeted seminar room within the Radiology Department.
The incident presented an immediate hygiene and infection-control risk within a live hospital environment. The contamination resulted in unpleasant odours and rendered the space unsafe for staff use. Due to the critical nature of hospital operations, the client required an urgent response to fully remove contamination, disinfect the affected area, and return the room to service with minimal disruption.
Assessment & Planning
APT ICC carried out an immediate remote assessment followed by on-site inspection to evaluate the extent of contamination and identify the most appropriate emergency response.
A full risk assessment and method statement (RAMS) were prepared in line with NHS infection control requirements. The cleaning and disinfection approach was carefully planned to ensure effective decontamination while safeguarding staff, patients, and hospital operations.
Methodology
APT ICC delivered emergency cleaning and disinfection using specialist hospital-grade equipment and approved chemical treatments.
The works were carried out as follows:
1. Isolation of the affected area to prevent cross-contamination.
2. Emergency carpet extraction cleaning to remove sewage-contaminated wastewater.
3. Multiple extraction passes to ensure full removal of contaminants and residues.
4. Application of hospital-grade disinfectants to sanitise carpet fibres and surrounding surfaces.
5. Odour neutralisation to restore a clean, usable environment.
This controlled approach ensured the area was fully sanitised and safe for reuse.
